ABOUT THE ARCHIVE

Ninth Archive is an evolving archive of contemporary objects informed by symbolic forms, material memory, and the enduring instinct to carry certain things close. Designed not as ornament, but as objects of presence — shaped through wear, oxidation, weight, and time.

THE DESIGNER

Xuan 玄

Born in Northern China and currently based in New York, Xuan’s work explores symbolic objects, aged surfaces, and the quiet relationship between people and the things they keep close.

During his early years, he spent extended periods traveling through Western China and Himalayan regions, where he became deeply interested in weathered devotional objects, cast-metal ritual forms, and the physical traces left on materials through oxidation, handling, and time.

Rather than approaching these objects through religion, his focus centered on form, weight, texture, and material presence — how certain objects feel carried, lived with, and slowly transformed through wear.

MATERIAL MEMORY

For centuries, silver, brass, gold, and steel have been shaped into personal objects across Eastern and Himalayan regions — from guardian pendants and ritual implements to devotional objects carried through daily life.

Over time, these materials darkened through oxidation, softened through contact, and developed surfaces marked by handling and wear. Their physical transformation became part of the object itself.

Ninth Archive continues this relationship with material through restrained contemporary forms designed to evolve over time.

Ninth Archive approaches these traditions through reinterpretation rather than reproduction, reducing symbolic forms into restrained contemporary objects shaped by material presence, weight, and wear.

This relationship between object and wearer is what we describe as Carried Intent — the enduring instinct to keep certain things close, not only for how they appear, but for how they are carried and lived with over time.
